BAGDAD - Una battaglia durissima si è svolta oggi nel cuore della capitale irachena, con l'attacco - da parte dei militari Usa - portato contro molti dei luoghi simbolo del potere: due palazzi governativi sarebbero stati conquistati. In una città che, grazie a una rete di posti di blocco, è stata completamente isolata rispetto all'esterno. BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- U.S.-led forces swept into Baghdad Monday, took over Saddam Hussein's main palace and destroyed a 40-foot statue of the Iraqi leader -- the most dramatic step yet in the coalition's effort to show Iraqis their leadership is being conquered.

US troops have established a presence in the heart of Baghdad after raiding Saddam Hussein's
main palace and battling Iraqi forces.
South of Baghdad, the US military says initial field tests on chemicals found near the city of Karbala suggest the possible presence of the nerve agents sarin and tabun, as well as mustard gas. The Pentagon has cautioned that these are only preliminary results and further laboratory tests will be conducted. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said that could take days.
